Trenton man charged in corrections officer's killing

Murder charges have been filed against a Trenton man accused of fatally shooting an off-duty New Jersey corrections officer at a city banquet hall.

Twenty-six-year-old Maurice Skillman is charged in the death of Carl Batie, a 27-year-old Willingboro resident who served in Mercer County.

Batie was one of several people standing on a second-story rear deck at the hall when shots rang out on Nov. 11. And while the shooting appears to be gang-related, prosecutors say Batie was an innocent bystander and not the shooter's intended victim.

Authorities say Skillman fired more than 20 shots in a bid to hit someone else who was standing on the deck. But they would not identify the person the allegedly targeted.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting.
