Report: Toll collector cuts lower NJ Turnpike budget

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. - December 27, 2012

A Turnpike Authority spokesman tells The Asbury Park Press that the 2013 budget contains a $3 million decrease in the cost of collecting tolls. That's due in part to lower starting salaries for new toll collectors and an altered pay structure for part-time collectors.

The concessions were agreed to in April 2011 as a way to head off the prospect of privatizing toll collections on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

Toll collector jobs could be eliminated by next July if the Turnpike Authority moves toward cashless toll collections.
