Thief attempts to break into ATM machine

NEW CASTLE, Del. - December 31, 2012

The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. at the M&T bank branch, located on the Ferry Cut-off.

Police say surveillance video shows the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Mark Y. Kemp of the 200 block of E. Flagstone Drive, pull his vehicle up to the ATM machine.

Kemp, who was wearing a gas mask, then got out and attempted to pry open the machine.

After one failed attempt, Kemp left the scene, only to return a second time. For his second attempt, Kemp brought with him a claw hammer. However, he was still unable to open the machine, and eventually left empty handed.

Upon reviewing the surveillance video, a New Castle City officer recognized Kemp as the suspect he arrested for a DUI back in October.

Officers later recovered the gas mask and claw hammer from Kemp's home.

Warrants have been issued for Kemp's arrest, charging him with attempted felony theft and felony criminal mischief. If you have any information pertaining to his whereabouts, you are asked to contact police.
