'Les Miserables' opens at the Academy of Music

PHILADELPHIA - January 2, 2013

The first of 16 performances begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy of Music and runs through January 13th.

The Cameron Mackintosh Production draws crowds wherever it goes, but certainly embraces any boost it gets from the number three movie currently at the box office; that would be "Les Miserable" starting Hugh Jackman.

The return to Philadelphia is pretty special for Les Miz. For one reason, the 25th anniversary production run began here two years ago, and for another, Philadelphia arts fans, like Philadelphia sports fans, are pretty dedicated.

Assistant Stage Manager Mitch Hodges remembers the reception they received two years ago.

"Standing ovations every night, shouts and screams; there was no place like it," he said.

In just a matter of hours, all of the props will be in place and all of the costumes will be off the racks and transformed into the theatrical production many have come to love.

The last chance to hear Jean Valjean's voice in Philadelphia will be when Les Miz says oeuvre on January 13th.
