The first homicide of 2013 came just 30 minutes into the New Year at a party on the 5600 block of Carpenter Street in West Philadelphia. An altercation over a missing cell phone escalated and ended in gunfire. A 16-year-old boy was shot once in the chest. The teen later died.
Police sources tell Action News that 18-year-old Kamonne Jordan, of the 5600 block of Carpenter Street, was taken into custody shortly after the murder.
Following the shooting, sources say Jordan got into his car, drove away, and called police, telling them that he was the shooter.
Jordan, who has a license to carry a firearm, allegedly claimed the shooting was in self defense because he felt threatened during the fight.
Interestingly, there was a fire on the same block of Carpenter Street overnight, which investigators say may have been intentionally set. Police are investigating whether the fire was connected to the shooting.
The victim's name has not been released.
