The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services said the family found the kitten on their property the night of January 1st.
They brought it into their home in an attempt to nurse it back to health, but it died the next night.
An animal control officer picked up the kitten and arranged for rabies testing. On Friday, the test results came back positive.
The entire family was exposed, authorities said, and will have to be treated. The two family dogs were also exposed to the kitten.
"Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment," said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department in a written statement. "If you have been bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal it is important that you seek immediate medical attention."
