Ex-Philly detective gets 4 years for steroid ring

PHILADELPHIA - January 7, 2013

The sentence imposed Monday by U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond against 36-year-old Keith Gidelson is one year longer than the recommended federal guidelines.

Prosecutors said Gidelson operated the steroid and human growth hormone distribution organization in Philadelphia and around the country. Authorities say he obtained monthly shipments of anabolic steroids and HGH from suppliers in Europe and China.

Gidelson said he was desperate for money to support his family after job-related trauma, including a 2006 car accident that led to his permanent medical disability.

The judge said he didn't buy Gidelson's excuse.

Two other former police officers also have pleaded guilty in the case. They are awaiting sentencing.
