The Centre Daily Times reports the 40-year-old graduate student had her throat cut while she was on the trail, which is located on university property about two miles from central campus. The attack set off a large-scale police response, but they have reported no leads.
Police say there was at least one report of a man matching the attacker's description running through a field shortly afterward, but that he eluded police.
The woman escaped by biting the man on his hand.
University spokeswoman Lisa Powers says the investigation is ongoing. Police have said they don't believe the woman knew her attacker.
