It was around 7:15 a.m. when the mail spilled from a tractor trailer in the northbound lanes near the intersection with Bristol Road.
According to the Postal Inspector's Office, the truck was owned by a subcontractor and was carrying mostly bulk mail, catalogs and fliers.
The cargo was in wheeled carts and held in place by a strap. However, that strap broke loose inside the truck and the carts smashed through the back door.
Postal employees picked up the mail and loaded it onto another truck. It will be re-sorted throughout the day.
It took about two hours to clean up the mess.
No injuries were reported.
