Groping suspect leads police on chase in Del.

NEW CASTLE, Del. - March 11, 2013

43-year-old Gregory S. Byerly of the 1700 block of Barbara Circle in Bear, Delaware was charged with Unlawful Sexual Contact Second Degree, Offensive Touching, Disregarding a Police Officer Signal, Aggressive Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and other numerous traffic offenses.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on the Battery Park walking path in New Castle City.

An officer on patrol in that area was alerted by a woman who pointed to a man whom she said had just fondled a 16-year-old girl. Police say the man reportedly grabbed a 44-year-old woman around the waist just before grabbing the teenager's buttocks.

The man, later identified as Byerly, got into his truck when approached by the officer.

The officer attempted to block Byerly in, but Byerly managed to maneuver around the officer's vehicle and fled the scene, striking a parked vehicle in the process.

Byerly was eventually stopped on Route 9 near Federal School Lane after striking the rear of a police vehicle.

No one was injured during the incident.

Byerly was committed to the Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,225 secured bond pending a Preliminary Hearing.
