Teens lagging on vaccinations

CHICAGO - March 18, 2013

The survey of 98,000 adolescents looked at why.

Some parents didn't realize some shots were necessary, such as a booster for tetanus and for whooping cough, and to protect against meningitis.

When it comes to a newer vaccine- the HPV vaccine - which protects against a virus that can lead to cervical cancer, a number of parents said it was either "not appropriate for their age," that their children "were not sexually active," or they were concerned about safety.

Overall, safety concerns rose from 4.5% in 2008 to 16.4% in 2010.

Researchers say the vaccine is safe. They would like to see healthcare providers do a better job in explaining which vaccines are needed and why they are so important. They would like to see healthcare providers do a better job in explaining which vaccines are needed and why they are so important.
