CSX train derails in South Philadelphia yard; no injuries

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - March 24, 2013

CSX said in a statement that the cars were part of an 87-car train arriving from Rocky Mount, N.C., and three of the cars were left on their sides.

One car on its side and one car remaining upright after the 12:30 p.m. Sunday accident in the company's yard contained vinyl acetate, but officials said no leaks or injuries resulted.

Emergency dispatchers said no fire department service was needed.

The company is investigating and was sending crews to rerail the cars.

Vinyl acetate is used to make latex paints, paper coatings, adhesives, safety glass and other products. The EPA says exposure can cause eye and upper respiratory tract irritation.
