Twenty-four-year-old Eddie Poindexter Tate was sentenced Tuesday. He had been convicted of second-degree murder last month in the September 2008 slaying of 31-year-old Veno Leigertwood outside his Delaware County home.
The victim worked in a program that provided academic support and mentoring to low-income students.
Authorities alleged that Tate told investigators that he and others were driving around looking for someone to rob when they saw Leigertwood outside his home and one of the other men attacked and then shot him.
Tate did not speak at the sentencing. His defense attorney called Tate's role in the crime "minimal" and says he'll appeal.
