The Bay Area is facing some fierce competition from Miami to host Super Bowl 50. But Lee says that having Young and Seifert on board could make for a winning pitch.
"And as I told Coach Seifert and Steve Young just now in my office, I paced five yards back in my office all day long and at home just to relive that possibility that occurred this past Super Bowl," Lee said. "And that just reflects the excitement that we have with the Super Bowl bid."
Young said he is thrilled to be a part of the bid to bring the Super Bowl to the San Francisco. He describes the new stadium as unique; a large, but still intimate space. Young believes now that it's in play, the Bay Area should be selected to host the big game, not just once, but as part of the lucrative Super Bowl rotation.
"Think about what we feel about the Bay Area; that's why it's the No. 1 destination in the world, it makes sense," he said.
Backers believe Young, Seifert and the illustrious history of the 49er franchise will be a key selling point.
"It invigorates the community and helps with fundraising and community outreach and shows the bid committee and the NFL owners that this is truly a community effort," 49ers CEO Jed York said.
San Francisco submits a formal bid on May 7 and makes an in-person presentation to the owners later that month. If the Bay Area loses out to Miami for Super Bowl 50, it becomes a head to head competition against Houston for Super Bowl 51.
