The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office announced this week that a total of ten people have been charged with insurance fraud and related crimes for false personal injury claims filed after the crash involving the Route "C" bus on April 5, 2010.

That tenth person is still being sought.

According to investigators, the bus was travelling north on Broad Street when a side view mirror hit an abandoned newsstand.

District Attorney Seth Willaims said surveillance video showed no passengers "were disturbed or made sudden movements" after impact. The only damage to the bus was a broken mirror and a cracked window.

Police did not respond to the scene, Williams said, and no one on the bus reported an injury to the bus driver.

However, after the crash, SEPTA said it received notices of personal injury claimes from the attorney at seven law firms representing the 10 defendants.

The lawsuits included "demands of money from SEPTA for medical bills and pain and suffering," Williams said.

There were settlement requests ranging from $5,000 to $225,000.

The D.A.'s Insurance Fraud Unit began an investigation, and allegdly found that only six of the ten defendants were actually on the bus at the time, and surveillance video from the bus contradicted specific details of the claims.
