The accident happened around 12:10 a.m. Tuesday on Route 563 near Sugar Hill Drive.
Authorities say 21-year-old Sean Christopher Sperl of Lansdale, Pennsylvania was behind the wheel of the speeding 2000 Honda Civic when he failed to negotiate a turn, crossing into the opposite lanes of travel, off the roadway and into a pole.
The impact with the pole tore the vehicle into two pieces - one half wrapped around the pole and the other half ended up across the street 50 feet away.
Pennsylvania State Police say 21-year-old Ryan Alexander Petrille, also of Lansdale, was thrown from the passenger seat of the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Sperl is being treated for injuries.
State Police are continuing to investigate, and say it will be at least a day before any formal charges are filed.
