Some researchers are now saying eggs are not as healthy as we once thought.
Years ago, the advice was to limit the number of eggs you eat per week.
That was due to concerns about the cholesterol in the egg yolk.
However, current advice says eating an egg a day is safe and won't raise your cholesterol, but now there is new concern.
This time it's not about the cholesterol, per se; it's about bacteria in your body.
Your body uses the bacteria to break down components in the egg yolk and that creates a chemical known as TMAO.
High levels of this are linked to a greater risk for heart disease and stroke.
So now what?
Action News spoke with Dr. Gregg Fonarow with the American Heart Association. He says they are watching this research, but at this point, it doesn't change the current guidelines which is an egg a day is fine.
But if you are concerned, you should talk to your healthcare provider.
You can also take an online test.
It is free and it gives you an idea about your heart health and ways to make changes.
