DUI charges in overturned tanker crash on Route 301 in Middletown, Delaware

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - April 30, 2013

It happened at 2:04 a.m. Tuesday when a 2002 Chevrolet van driven by Yuni Gonzalez, 21, collided with a 2006 Peterbilt truck towing a tanker trailer filled with latex paint.

The truck was driven by 49-year-old David Strang of Elmer, N.J.

Police say Gonzalez was driving north in the southbound lane of Middletown Warwick Road (Route 301) when the collision happened, causing the tanker to roll on its side, blocking both lanes.

Strang was taken to Christiana Hospital with minor injuries. Gonzalez was also taken to Christiana with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gonzalez has been charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, driving without a license, and failing to have insurance identification in his possession.

Route 301 was still shut down in both directions at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday as crews worked to remove the latex paint from the trailer and clean up diesel fuel spilled on the road.
