Erol Veznedaroglu, MD, FACS, FAANS, FAHA, Director, Capital Institute for Neurosciences, Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery Capital Health

Director, Capital Institute for Neurosciences Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery Capital Health During his time at Capital Health he has spearheaded the development of the healthcare system's neurosciences research program, the establishment of neuro intensive care units at its Regional Medical Center and at its new Hopewell campus with a total of 40 dedicated beds for neuroscience patients requiring intensive care, as well as the opening of the country's first and only dedicated neurologically focused emergency department. Under his leadership, the Institute now treats more patients requiring brain as well as aneurysm surgery than any other hospital in New Jersey. Capital Health was also one of only eight hospitals in the nation – and the only one in NJ, PA and DE – recognized by the Joint Commission as a 2011 Top Performer for Stroke Care.

Formerly director of the Division of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery and director of the endovascular cerebrovascular neurosurgery fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Dr. Veznedaroglu is one of the most experienced cerebrovascular neurosurgeons in the country. His philosophy in building the Institute has been to bring together some of the most experienced neuroscience professionals from across the country, combine them with the most advanced technology and procedures, and provide the highest level of neuroscience care available in a personal, comfortable and accessible environment traditionally not found at large academic medical centers.

Dr. Veznedaroglu completed his fellowship training in cerebrovascular/neurointerventional neurosurgery and neuro-critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for Neuroscience. His expertise includes the treatment of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stroke and other potentially fatal conditions of the brain.

During his oversight of the neurosciences program at Capital Health, the healthcare system has been the first in the country, and the Philadelphia region, to trial new devices for the treatment of stroke and the first to use glue to treat an aneurysm patient in New Jersey.

Dr. Veznedaroglu is one of a select number of neurosurgeons in the country trained in both traditional neurosurgical approaches as well as endovascular approaches, enabling his patients to have the full range of treatment options available to them under the direction of the same physician.

Dr. Veznedaroglu has also designed and invented coils for the treatment of wide-necked aneurysms and was the first neurosurgeon in the country to use the Trevo® Pro Retriever, following approval by the FDA, for the treatment for stroke. He was also the first doctor in the mid-Atlantic region pioneering the use of numerous devices including the Wingspan stent system, the first FDA-approved stent used to open clogged arteries in the brain, the Merci Retriever, the Penumbra device, and the Cordis Enterprise Stent for the treatment of wide necked aneurysms.

In addition to leading these and many other innovative best practices in stroke and cerebrovascular care, he is the only physician in the region who can proctor and train other physicians across the country on these same devices.

In addition to his clinical leadership, Dr. Veznedaroglu is an invited lecturer at conferences both throughout the country and internationally. He has lectured extensively on the treatment of aneurysm, subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke and other intracranial vascular disorders.

Dr. Veznedaroglu is the primary investigator of numerous clinical and basic science studies related to cerebrovascular disease and is a nationally recognized academic leader in the area of cerebrovascular care, having written chapters and articles in various publications that are used as data for his colleagues across the country.

Dr. Veznedaroglu has been recognized by both peers and patients as a Top Doc, appearing in SJ Magazine's 2011 and 2012 Top Doc issue and as part of South Jersey Magazine's Top Docs as voted by readers feature the last two years. He was also recognized as a finalist in the category of Best Physician by NJ Biz in its annual Healthcare Heroes awards program.
