Beer-seeking grocery execs get leery Pa. senators

HARRISBURG, Pa. - May 14, 2013

A Senate committee hearing Tuesday focused on groups that make and sell alcoholic beverages and is the second of three that are planned.

Gov. Tom Corbett is pushing his fellow Republicans who control the Legislature to pass legislation to privatize the state-controlled liquor stores and expand the sale of alcoholic beverages to more outlets.

But senators seemed hostile to two supermarket executives, from Wegman's and Redner's, who testified in favor of allowing beer in grocery store aisles.

Senators questioned why they should allow them to take away business from the state's existing distributorships.
