Woman who hit Hatfield teen was drunk, reading text message, police say

HATFIELD, Pa. (AP) - April 27, 2013

Sarah Ann Derstein, 32, of Lansdale, Pa., is charged with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol and related charges.

Prosecutors say Derstein was drunk and reading a text message when the 2007 Toyota Corolla she was driving struck two teenagers at Route 309 and Mill Road around 11:30 p.m. on Friday April 26th.

Dennis Kee, 15, of Hatfield, Pa., who was walking with three friends, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deshawn Page, 15, suffered a broken elbow. The other two juveniles were not injured.

Prosecutors say Derstein left the scene and that cell phone records show she continued south on Route 309 into Philadelphia.

They say she then returned to the scene about an hour later and told officers she thought she hit something.

Police say her car had front-end damage and she appeared to be intoxicated. Tests later revealed her blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania.

Prosecutors say police also found marijuana inside a pack of cigarettes in the car.

An arraignment was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
