Trial of Pa. voter ID law enters seventh day

HARRISBURG, Pa. - July 17, 2013

Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard McGinley is expected to hear more testimony Tuesday from witnesses for plaintiffs seeking to overturn the requirement that all voters show acceptable photo IDs before they may cast ballots.

Monday's session focused on testimony by a former policy director for the Pennsylvania Department of State, who defended the law as a reasonable compromise, even though it left out changes that the department recommended to ease some of the requirements.

The March 2012 law, one of the nation's strictest, has not been enforced because of the challenge. Both sides in the trial have they expect the state Supreme Court will ultimately settle the case.
