The inmates can puff on this

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - August 12, 2013

Cigarettes are banned in the lockup.

But inmates can now buy electronic cigarettes at the jail store.

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor tells a local television station that he hopes the new smokes will result in calmer inmates.

He notes that contraband tobacco is one of the jail's biggest problems.

But an e-cig fix doesn't come cheap.

The jail store is selling the e-cigarettes for 18 bucks each.

Taylor adds there's no cost to the county and the jail makes $4 to $5 profit on each one.
