Phila. School District, teachers union continue negotiations

PHILADELPHIA - September 1, 2013

Talks between the union and the school district continued into the night.

Just after midnight, the PFT released this statement:

"We are making some progress in negotiations, but there are still difficult issues that we are working hard to resolve. We will continue to work with the district to negotiate the terms of a new contract."

The cash-strapped district says it wants more than $100 million in savings from teachers. That would be accomplished through wage cuts and health care concessions.

This comes as school leaders try to close a $300 million budget gap.

Even without an agreement, teachers are expected to show up for work on Tuesday.

Classes are set to begin on September 9.
