Atlantic City police officer injured in ATV crash

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - September 2, 2013

It happened around 8:00 Monday night at the intersection of Pacific and South Pennsylvania avenues.

Police say it all began while Sgt. Daryl Hall was working an off-duty detail at the Taj Mahal parking garage.

Hall was called to respond to the second floor for a bar employee with unruly and combative behavior.

The employee allegedly assaulted a security officer and Sgt. Hall called for backup.

Officer Michael Mayer was patrolling the beach on his ATV, received the call and went to respond.

While en route, Ofc. Mayer crashed his ATV and sustained a serious leg injury.

He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for surgery. His injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Hall and his K9 partner Max successfully apprehend the bar employee, who was later identified as 48-year-old Jonathan James.

During the arrest, Max suffered minor injuries to the mouth and nose.

James was also injured during the arrest. He was taken to the hospital where he is expected to be treated and released.

James will face a list of charges including Aggravated Assault on Police and Resisting Arrest.
