Gourmet ice-cream straight from the farm

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - September 12, 2013

But if you want excellence in either, you might have to look around. That is, unless you live in South Philadelphia's Pennsport neighborhood.

In recent months, Brown Chicken Brown Cow has been aiming high with both and people are travelling in to get them.

Owner Eric Luther says he's tried to bring the farm-to-table movement to ice cream.

Luther has a deal with Shady Brook farm in Bucks County.

Gourmet ice cream is made there at least once a week, and the farmer trucks it directly to his shop. Typically, there'll be a dozen flavors on the menu.

Vanilla and chocolate are always on the list, and always best-sellers. But there's also a rotating selection of other choices, including some seasonal ones.

Pumpkin is available only in fall, for example. The menu offers cones, dishes, and bigger ice cream shop favorites, too.

Right down the counter is a first-rate espresso machine that's the centerpiece of a coffee bar. Everything's brewed fresh, to order.

And yes, you can combine the shop's featured items in the Affagato, a dish of ice cream topped with a shot of espresso.

Brown Chicken Brown Cow is open weekdays from 3:00 to 8:00pm. Weekends, it's open from 9:00am to 8:00pm. You'll probably find free parking on the street nearby.
