Mitchell was found guilty Tuesday of taking part in an elaborate scheme that cheated the government out of millions of dollars.
The 34-year-old former wide receiver told the judge he suffered many concussions from playing football, and that the injuries have caused him mental disabilities.
Mitchell is perhaps best known to Philadelphia fans for his 4th-and-26 catch in the 2004 NFL playoffs that helped the Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers.
