Multiple dogs found malnourished in South Philadelphia

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - October 25, 2013

The SPCA was tipped off by a local animal rescue group.

Five dogs were found emaciated. One of the animals died after being rushed to the SPCA Headquarters.

Photos of the dog were too graphic to be shown.

"The dog is a 4-year-old pit bull dog that was totally skin and bones. The animal was alive when we were on scene, we rushed it up to Erie Avenue and the animal passed during the transport," said George Bengal, SPCA.

Miller Pitt and his girlfriend, Karlin Johnson, are facing animal cruelty charges. Neither said anything as they were escorted to a police cruiser on Friday night.

The SPCA says that most of the dogs stayed in the basement in crates with no food or water.

It smelled of feces and urine but the rest of the house was well kept.

"Something here just went awry. I don't know exactly what it was but they are going to be arrested for it. You can't let an animal be tied up in the backyard starve to death," said Bengal.

The SPCA says they have met Pitt before after getting a complaint a year ago.

They gave him a warning but now he is facing misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty
