City of cheesesteaks backs 'Meatless Mondays'

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; Oct. 30, 2013

It is largely symbolic, but it does encourage people in the 'city of Cheesesteaks' not to eat meat on Monday.

The goal is to get everyone thinking about healthier eating.

The resolution points out that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans consume 195 pounds of meat a year, 60 pounds more than they ate in the 1950s.

Philadelphia has the highest rates of obesity and diabetes of the ten largest cities in the country.

Baltimore, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have passed similar measures.
