Boy Scout Troop 449 got to work Saturday in Rhawnhurst.
"I'm collecting canned goods for charity," said Cade Brydges.
A week after dropping off empty plastic bags on doorsteps, they returned this weekend walking away with bags full of canned goods.
"When we first started out, there wasn't many but then it started rolling like crazy," said Matthew Horan.
"If someone has extra food they don't need, they should give it out," said Joe Przepiorka.
Each troop had their own drop off, and there were multiple locations across the area.
Philabundance will take a portion and some troops will keep the goods for food banks in their communities.
After the pickups, the boys sort through the donations and send them where they are needed most.
Many were surprised by Saturday's large turnout.
"I started to see a bunch of other bags I guess they just wanted to help out," said Williams Lackman.
"Scouts is all about preparing them for life and preparing for life is about giving back to the community and this is what that is all about," said Lt. George McClay, scoutmaster.
Lt. McClay and State Representative Ed Neilson are both troop leaders.
They know firsthand why this annual event is as important for the community as it is for their boys.
"George and I were cub scouts together and we did this with our fathers," said Rep. Neilson .
Not only was it great for the community, but the boys enjoyed it also.
"It makes me feel good, it feels really good," said Alex Horan.
"Makes me feel happy I get to help people," said Nicholas Merrigan.
Melissa Gallagher knows the week before Thanksgiving, it's time to fill the bag. She caught up with the children on Saturday.
"I love to donate and help the less fortunate," said Gallagher.
One scout leader says that they get about 25,000-30,000 cans at one particular location.
If you missed the opportunity to donate, there's still more time.
During the 6abc/Dunkin Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade, scouts will be collecting cans along the parade route.
