Authorities say a 10-year-old boy has died after a fire at his Reading home that apparently started when a child played with a lighter.

Flames hit a three story home on the 1100 block of Elm Street at 4.30 p.m. Friday.

Fire officials say the fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom, while the boy was trapped one floor above it.

Firefighters rescued the boy, but he died after getting to the hospital.

Neighbor Richard Schmeer says he tried to reach the child through the roof, before firefighters arrived and carried him out.

The mother of Jesus Velazquez says her son had just turned 10 on Christmas Day.

The boy was one of seven children.
