Water main break forces evacuations in East Falls

PHILADELPHIA - January 11, 2014

Firefighters were called out to the 3400 block of Fox Street around 5:30 a.m.

Flooding waters forced crews to evacuate employees from a Shop Rite grocery store in the new Bakers Shopping Center using small rescue boats.

Fire officials tell Action News that the main ruptured in the parking lot of the new shopping center sending water cascading down the lot, flooding through all of the stores.

Officials say at least 8 businesses were affected by the water main break.

The shopping center was recently built in the parking lot of the old TastyKake bakery.

Crews have capped the 48-inch main, and the Water Department says homeowners in the area should not lose water during repairs.
