Police: Gun, drugs, cash found on teen in Delaware school

NEWARK, Del. - February 5, 2014

18-year-old Zakeer Washington of Wilmington is charged with Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Person Prohibited, Receiving a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Firearm in a Safe School Zone, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Manufacture, and Deliver or PWID Controlled Substance with an Aggravating Factor.

It was around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday when a staff member at Newark High School alerted administrators that Washington, a student at the school, may be in possession of marijuana.

When an administrator confronted Washington, the teen was allegedly found to have a large quantity of marijuana in his backpack, totaling 46 grams of marijuana, packaged in 45 small plastic vials and 7 small bags.

A Newark Police Department School Resource Officer, who was present in the school, responded and conducted a search of Washington and his backpack, during which time a loaded 45 caliber handgun was allegedly discovered in the bag.

A large quantity of cash was also discovered. All the findings were seized and Washington was taken into custody without incident.

It was later found that the handgun was reported stolen in Somerset County, Pennsylvania back in August of 2013.
