Tractor-trailer collides with bus carrying college basketball team on Route 33

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - February 5, 2014

It happened around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in the northbound lanes of Route 33 northbound by mile marker 5.

Authorities say the bus was carrying 28 members of the U.S. Military Academy's women's basketball team.

The team was in the Lehigh Valley for a game against Lehigh University tonight.

"Our driver, who was terrific, was just getting us back from through a walk through this morning before our game against Lehigh University. The bus got rear-ended by a tractor-trailer," said Coach Magarity.

The game has now been postponed.

Multiple people onboard the bus were injured. Most of the injuries are minor, but everyone on the bus was transported for medical treatment as a precaution.

"A lot of our kids were banged up. It was a truly traumatic experience for them. I myself was a little banged up, but everyone is okay, it's just been a long day," said Coach Magarity.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was trapped in the cab of the rig for about an hour. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown but he is expected to survive.

Officials have not said if the weather has played role in the crash.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed until about 2:30 but all lanes have since reopened.

Police continue to investigate.
