Sandy aid distribution mishandled, critics say

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. - February 11, 2014

Three housing and community advocates told a state Senate oversight committee that many residents are confused after having been wrongly denied housing assistance.

Others didn't receive information on how to apply or appeal for aid in Spanish.

Tuesday's hearing in Trenton follows revelations that 80 percent of post-Sandy housing grant applicants were wrongly rejected. The administration quietly fired its Sandy aid contractor, the Louisiana firm of Hammerman and Gainer.

Community Affairs Commissioner Richard Constable may appear before the panel soon.

The first of three public hearings on the state's plans to spend the next $1.4 billion in Superstorm Sandy relief funds will take place Tuesday afternoon in Galloway Township.
