But one student at the University of Michigan-Flint senior has made his mortaboard into a sort of billboard.
The Flint Journal reports Alex Benda has been selling ad space on his graduation cap.
The paper reports that as of last week, he had raised $5,400.
The grad-to-be - who is 22 - wants to rent out as much of the 100 square inches of space on his graduation cap as he can before he walks the stage to get his degree on May 4.
He says he'll use the money to pare down his $30,000 student loan debt.
