Wilmington police launch text service

May 5, 2014 6:02:54 PM PDT
Wilmington police can now directly notify residents about emergencies in their neighborhood by text, email, even Facebook and Twitter.

The subscription service started Monday.

To register for the service called Nixle - text your zip code to 888777 or register online at Nixle.com. Registering online allows residents to customize their alert settings and choose to receive email and web alerts as well.

Residents can also use it to anonymously report tips to police.

Residents with information can now anonymously submit tips to the police department by texting TIP WILMINGTON and then the message to 888777. Residents can also submit photographs with their tips. This is not a substitute for 9-1-1. For emergency situations always call 9-1-1.
