Girl, 9, shot three times in Trenton, New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J.

The shooting happened just before 3:00 p.m. near Bellevue Avenue and Marion Street.

Police tell Action News a girl was walking on the street when she was struck three times, including wounds to her shoulder and leg.

She was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in an unknown condition.

However, the victim was talking and alert, police said and her parents are with her.

Neighbor Courtland Harris say he heard six shots.

"After the shots, I came out, my next door neighbor came out, we were looking; everyone was running, everybody was scattered," Harris said.

Authorities say earlier in the afternoon, a warrant squad was looking for an unidentified suspect at 282 Bellevue and when they couldn't find him, they left.

15 minutes later shots rang out in the neighborhood.

A black SUV parked near Marion Street was riddled with as many as nine rounds. The 9-year-old girl was hit during that hail of gunfire.

Police say they don't yet know if or how the man is connected to the victim or the shooting. He was taken into custody by authorities.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
