SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Residents came out by the hundreds to protest against the site of a proposed casino at 9th Street and Packer Avenue in South Philadelphia.

IBEW Local 98 Chief Johnny Dougherty was booed of stage as he and union bosses tried to make the argument that some of their neighbors are union members and are in need of the jobs being brought in.

"We will be going in there, battling for the best deal for the neighborhood and the neighborhood workers," said Mike Barnes of IATSE Local 8, before he too was booed.

The room was jammed-packed at Stella Marish Parish as more than 1,000 people showed up to discussed the proposed hotel and casino which is largely expected to get the next license to operate in Philadelphia.

Residents pointed out that it's just two blocks Mastery Thomas Elementary School.

"The children are the only asset we should be worried about. We can make jobs but we can't remake damaged children," said one resident.

They worry about becoming what they see as the economic train wreck across the river in New Jersey.

"We do not want to be the next Atlantic City," said Barbara Capozzi.

With two stadiums, an arena and an entertainment complex - residents feel they already have enough in their backyards.

"What is wrong with this place? A casino - are we pimping ourselves out? Come on, let's stand up for ourselves," said one resident, and the crowd cheered in support.

"We are tired of being dumped on, this is not the dumps anymore," said another resident.

The gaming control board is expected to announce it's decision next Tuesday.

If the site at 9th and Packer is chosen, South Philadelphia residents say they will keep fighting against it.
