BERLIN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Nearly 1,000 people turned out for the 'Wigs and Wishes' gala in Berlin, N.J. Sunday night.

The gala raises money for an organization called "Friends are by Your Side," which gives wigs to children and women battling cancer. That charity, and this event, was founded by celebrity hair stylist Martino Cartier.

It was a star studded night hosted by Cartier and pop icon Paula Abdul, plus appearances by other celebrities.

One boy battling cancer was granted a surprise wish, and two "Queens of the Night" - women who are battling cancer - received makeovers, including a professionally styled wig.

Action News spoke with one of those women who is battling breast cancer.

"This is wonderful," said Genavieve Foile of Blackwood, N.J. "I don't' feel very deserving but it's an honor to be here."

In the past this event has raised more than $300,000 to help cancer patients and grant their wishes.

Organizers said during the past year 22,000 wigs have been given away.
