Children across the region are wearing their Halloween costumes to class Tuesday,

Students in Bucks County put a special twist on the holiday by building costumes and vocabularies at the School Lane Charter school.

Students pick words, such as edible. electricity, and fragile.

The kids then become the words, like this fourth grade watchdog, with an affinity for puns.

"When you take it literally you end up having a dog that has a watch," said Fourth grader Joslyn Moon.

Third grader Aiden Eddleman-Kantor said, "For Halloween you can wear a costume, but at school you're usually not allowed to, so they make it fun while learning about vocabulary words."

The concept is inspired by a children's book. For 15 years, the school has held Vocabulary Day on Halloween, a popular tradition that gets the whole student body involved.

Principal David Robinson said, "Obviously it's Halloween but not all our students celebrate that, but want to give them a fun way to celebrate what they're learning in school that's similar to Halloween."

Watching parents and administrators believe the addition of exercises like this makes for a strong student.

One parent Bonnie Takakjy said, "They get to look up a word, they get to write the word, they get to learn what the word actually means."

CEO Karen Schaede said, "It's a fun way to talk about words, their usages, sentences."

This is really fun, but also and opportunity to learn own words, and pick up others along the way.

"I love love love writing stories and a lot of my stories have dialogue. Instead of saying said said said, it's easier to have a bigger vocabulary from reading books and stuff to know like replied, inquired," said Joslyn.

In Abington Township, the kids at McKinley Elementary School proudly paraded in their costumes.
