Police escort son of fallen officer to first day of kindergarten

CYPRESS, Texas (WPVI) -- Walking to his first day of kindergarten, Kevin Will Jr. was joined by his mother, his grandmother, and a sea of police officers.

That's because Kevin Jr. was missing a very important person by his side - his father. Tragically, Kevin's dad, Officer Kevin Will, was hit and killed by a drunk driver six years ago. He died two months before his son Kevin was born.

So more than 100 of his father's brothers and sisters in blue showed up to walk little Kevin Jr. to Wildwood Elementary School in Cypress, Texas, KTRK-TV reports.

"He'd like to have his dad here, but he's unfortunately not. So this is the second best thing and he's come to know them as a part of his family," said Cyndee Herring, Kevin Jr.'s grandmother.

Officer Don Egdorf was there the night of the accident and arrested the drunk driver. He testified at the trial, and now he's here for Kevin Jr.

"(We're) trying to do something to make sure that Kevin Jr. gets what he needs and has the support that he needs," said Officer Egdorf.

It was all a little overwhelming for the 5-year-old and his mom.

"I don't know. It's awesome. It's sad," said Alicia Will, Kevin Jr.'s mother.

The officers know that their involvement in Kevin Jr.'s life would not end that day. They hope to support the family as little Kevin grows up.
