Former Penn football player, Joseph Grosso, drowned in Florida Wednesday.

Officials with the University of Pennsylvania have released a statement after the death of a recent grad in a freak accident.

They say former Penn football player, 22-year-old Joseph Grosso, drowned around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pompano Beach.

He was part of a group on a diving trip.

They were all diving for lobsters when Grosso decided to dive once more on his own.

Grosso was a standout linebacker for the Quakers and had planned to play one more year with the Miami Hurricanes where he was about to enter law school.

Penn coach Al Bagnoli said in part, "Joe was a terrific young man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family."
