A South Florida high school teacher is in hot water after being accused of calling a student an ethnic slur.

BROWARD Co., Fla. (WPVI) -- A South Florida high school teacher is in hot water after being accused of calling a student an ethnic slur.

Maria Valdes will be suspended without pay for five days.

She is accused of a calling a Muslim student a Taliban.

The 14-year-old boy's father wanted Valdes fired or suspended for a year.

The Broward school board said the punishment wasn't harsher because they had to follow state, federal and union guidelines.
