NEW YORK CITY (WPVI) -- American Idol is gearing up for its first season on ABC and the show's producers have been scouring the country looking for the next big star.

This week, some hopefuls got the very first chance to audition in front of the new panel of judges in New York City.

To say the judges know a thing or two about success in the industry is an understatement. Pop sensation Katy Perry, legendary superstar Lionel Ritchie and country music star Luke Bryan say they aren't just picking and choosing the next Idol sensation - they're also mentors for this crop of rising stars.

The trio told Action News that in just two short days, they have found what they call diamonds and gems that they can't wait for America to see and hear.

They are looking for the total package, someone who is not afraid to step into the spotlight and own it, and they call themselves the dream team.

"This is the family! I can tell you I am having more fun because we all get along. These are friends of mine and we just happened to all end up on a show together," said Lionel Ritchie.

"I want to give back and I want to give that mentorship and all that information and education that I learned," said Katy Perry.

"It's going to be fun! I love just sitting back. Our job is to kind of stay out of the way, intervene when we need to, and try to find a daggone big old star," said Luke Bryan.

Ryan Seacrest is back as the host. He's been with the show since day one and calls it 'the ex he never wanted to leave'.

The show premieres next year right here on 6abc.
