A beauty queen in Japan is facing criticism from her home country because she is biracial.

Ayana Miyamoto is the first ever biracial winner of the Miss Universe Japan competition.

But now the beauty queen facing some tough criticism from her home country for not being Japanese enough.

Miyamoto is half Japanese, and half African American.

Some say being darker skinned and nearly 6 feet tall doesn't represent the country's demographic.

She says growing up she was bullied for being different.

Temple University Asian studies professor Jeff Kingston says she is the first to break this beauty barrier there.

"It sends a very positive message about the changing Japan to the rest of the world," says Kingtston.

Miyamoto says even if she doesn't win the competition in January she could change the definition of "being Japanese."
