VIDEO: Mekhi Phifer stops by 6abc
Alicia Vitarelli interviews actor Mekhi Phifer about his role in the movie 'Insurgent'.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The "Divergent" series is headed back to the big screen.

The sequel to last year's blockbuster hits theaters today.

Mehki Phifer, star of both the big and small screens, joined us at 6abc to dish about "Insurgent" - the second installment of the wildly popular series.

He says this film is where the big action happens.

Phifer joins a star studded cast, including Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts.

This second of three film adaptation of Veronica Roth's best-selling books follows a post-apocalyptic society divided into factions by personality traits.

Phifer plays Max, the leader of the Dauntless crew.

When asked about his villanous, bad guy character, Phifer says, "People keep saying that! I think he's complicated. He does do some bad things but I think he really is complicated because I don't think he's doing it maliciously."

"I think what he really feels like he's doing is good for society," he adds.

Phifer says Max just does it with an iron fist and is a very fun character to play.

He says he intentionally didn't read the books because he wants to live in the moment now and once they are finished with the third film he can't wait to read them.

"Insurgent" is in theaters today and is rated PG-13.
