Peter and the Wolf runs April 16th-18th in the Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall.

It's childhood fairytales all grown up as The Philadelphia Orchestra presents Peter and The Wolf, a theatrical concert that stages four famous tales all in one evening, and it's led by the orchestra's newest member.

"Stéphane Denéve is officially taking on the title of principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. These are his first concerts in that role, and he is presenting a whole program of wonderful fables and fairytales," says Jeremy Rothman, Vice Present for Artistic Planning of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The Russian children's tale Peter and the Wolf gets a moody makeover. Set to visuals from the 2008 Academy Award-winner for best animated short film, Rothman says the score is brought to life by the Philadelphia Orchestra.

"Although we would think of it as a kid's piece, this Claymation film has a darker, more modern setting. So it's a great way for adult audiences to come out and hear this piece."

The concert also features the Curtis-trained Naughton twins bringing Saint Saens' Carnival of Animals to life on dual pianos.

"There are also two other great works also based on ballet and fables and animals," says Rothman, "it's lots of wonderful storytelling but also these great scores that are highlighted by the Orchestra."

Rothman says this theatrical fantasy, with its musical storytelling, is a can't miss.

"You hear the clarinet depicting the cat climbing the tree, you hear the flute imitating the bird flying around. The oboe is the duck, the grandfather is the bassoon....film lovers, music lovers, interested in a new theatrical experience should come out and see this concert."
