Saving with 6abc: See the Philadelphia Orchestra for free

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Usually, if you want to see the Philadelphia Orchestra perform, you have to go to the Kimmel Center and pay for a ticket.

But this week, the orchestra is performing a series of free concerts, throughout the area.

The Philadelphia Orchestra Free Days start this morning with an 11:00 a.m. concert at the Main Branch of the Library. Events run through Thursday, with a total of six different events over the four days.

Orchestra President and C.E.O. Allison Vulgamore explains, "We're coming outside of the concert hall and giving free events as encores of thanks to the communities in Philadelphia. It excites us because we are going to divide up into different kinds of groups and do different kinds of activities."

On, Tuesday, orchestra members will play side-by-side with members of two youth orchestras in University City.

On Wednesday, they'll head to the suburbs to play with members of the Lower Merion Symphony.

Vulgamore adds, "We're also going to do a sing-in. I happen to be a singer, so, join us in the Perlman for a sing-in of The Messiah."

At lunchtime on Thursday, audience members will get to conduct the orchestra as they play at Liberty Place. And the free concerts wrap up that night at the Navy Yard.

Vulgamore says even if you're not a classical-music lover, you should give these concerts a try.

"These are great experiences to come and just bring your heart and your ear. You don't have to know anything. Actually, it's our job to move you," she explains.
