October 15, 2015 (WPVI) -- Broadway Philadelphia kicks off its new season with a slapstick crime comedy that is classic Woody Allen.

Bullets Over Broadway is based on Allen's 1994 movie by the same name, and it is a show about a Broadway show that earned 6 Tony nominations when it premiered last year, including a nod for best choreography.

Bullets Over Broadway, is set in the Roaring 20s and tells the tale of David Shayne who is trying to make it as a playwright. "It's a high energy romp that features a lot of great performances, a lot of flappers, a lot of gangster, and a lot of the fun that people, when you say roaring 20s, what you'll think of," says Frances Egler, Director of Broadway Philadelphia Programming.

The young playwright has written what he considers his masterpiece, but no one will finance it. So he turns to the biggest gangster in town to get his show to the stage "And he says he'll produce it with one condition, and that condition is that he would have his girlfriend lead, and his girlfriend is a horrible actress, has no talent and cannot sing or dance," says Egler, who adds that the zingers, puns and visual comedy Woody Allen is known for ensue, "it's the misadventures of trying to figure out how they're going to deal with producing his dream production with the one thing that's going to destroy his dream production.

The production marks the first time Allen has worked with Tony award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman, who brings the Flapper Era roaring back to life.

"It's a lot of songs you might know like, Yes! We Have No Bananas, T'aint Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do," says Egler,"The show just really delivers what you think is a fun high quality Broadway presentation. It's got singing. It's got dancing. It's got comedy. It's very reverent. It's a really fun time in the theater."
